A 67-year-old Dutton resident suffered serious injuries after a “home-built” airplane crashed into a house under construction, provincial police say.

The aircraft, a small Rutan Long-EZ with a single-engine piston, crashed about 6:15 p.m. Thursday in the area of Leitch Street in the small community of Dutton, about 50 kilometres southwest of London, Elgin OPP said.

The crash happened after the plane, considered an amateur-built plane that people themselves can construct, went down short of a grass landing and crashed into the foundations of a home that’s being built, police said.

The pilot, who was the lone occupant of the airplane, was flown to hospital with what police described as “serious, life-altering” injuries.

No other injuries were reported by police.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has been contacted and will be leading the investigation into the crash, police said.
